Tsukishima Monja Okoge Asagaya

The word "monja" appears in Utagawa Kuninao's "Kaidan" (Ghost Stories) published in 1819, indicating that its taste was well-known in the late Edo period. It was only available at a very limited number of establishments and was passed down as "Chigusa," comparable to Sen no Rikyu's tea ceremony. In the Meiji era, it was established as "Mojiyaki" or "Monji." In the Taisho era, it was affectionately called "Dondon-yaki" and "Ichi-sen-yaki." During wartime and post-war periods, amidst food shortages, it was made as a snack for children by grilling cabbage, green onions, and pickled red ginger with dashi broth. In Tsukishima, around the 1950s, it evolved into the "Mojiyaki style" with roofs over storefronts in residential areas. Tsukishima now boasts about 100 stores spread over approximately 1.65 million square meters, and it is referred to as "Tengenchi" in reference to this.
